Memorial Day Weekend 2007
Wow. What a weekend weather wise. This time of the year here you are lucky if you get two nice days back to back, and they are never on the weekend. But for the long holiday the rain stayed away everyday. It started off rainy Friday night forcing us to cancel our softball games but the rest was nice and sunny.
Finally getting out to some of the places that are very close to the apartment I found some nice look outs over the 99 Islands that I wrote about last year. There were some great photo opportunities on the semi-clear day. Anybody who has seen Tom Cruise's "The Last Samurai" saw this view in the opening scenes. There is a little billboard telling about it next to the lookout.

Also on Sunday I went to the Sasebo Zoo and Botanical Garden which is about a five minute drive from my house. It was ok, but nothing spectacular. It was weird looking at animals in cages again after seeing them up close (and even interacting with them) in Thailand. But none the less animals are animals and it was a great way to kill an afternoon. The giraffe below seems to be infatuated with the wall, I wasn't sure what was going on but he didn't seem to care that I was filming him.

I got to Sasebo's little beach on Monday to soak up some of the rays knowing there weren't going to be too many people there. Shirahama beach is about a 20 minute drive from my house. There's not much to it, but its popular amongst the locals in the middle of summer. I hear its a pretty hoppin place in season but I've only ever gone outside of the 2 month window.
